St Martin Attractions

Fort St. Louis

The biggest hitorical tourist attraction in the French side of Saint Martin, Fort St Louis was built by (and named for) Louis XVI of France to protect the French colony of Marigot from invaders - especially the Dutch, and pirates. It was built in 1767 on a hill towering over Marigot Bay and today provides spectacular views of the beach...for those who can face the steep climb!

Marigot Market

Every Saturday and Wednesday, at the foot of Fort St Louis is the open air Marigot Market, which is everything you would imagine a French Caribbean market would be. The Caribbean influence in the tropical fruits (particularly papaya), spices like Ginger, and fresh fish, while the sidewalk cafes, artists' galleries and fashionable clothing stores are definitely French!
You can find the Marigot Market next to the Ferry Terminal.
