Florida Keys

Key West, Florida

The only coral islands located in the continental United States, the Florida Keys offer crystal clear water, warm winters, outstanding fishing and diving, and some extraordinary resorts. For more information see The Florida Keys and Key West official tourism council Web-site.
The Keys have experienced an explosion of tourism and development recently. Scuba diving and snorkeling are the biggest attractions for the Keys. (see Diving The Florida Keys). Also see Jules Undersea Lodge for the only underwater hotel in the USA.

Political pressure to protect wildlife and the coral reef (see Reef Relief) is increasing and many believe protecting the reef could help the Keys become one of the most sought after resort destinations in the world.

The most interesting island in the group is Key West. Rich in history, island life, and water sports activities, Key West is the number one travel destination in the Keys. Cruise Ships also stop in Key West to allow passengers to enjoy the wide spectrum of shopping, sightseeing, and night life. The shopping district is located in the historic district of Duval Street.

The finest resorts in Key West are > The Pier House and The Hyatt. Located on the water on the west side of Key West, both resorts are at the center of the famous gathering for sunset, a daily occurrence in Key West. In addition, both are just a few steps from Duval Street, the center of activity on the island. Also see Atlantic Shores Resort, and Ocean Key House for other extraordinary resorts.

Also see Key West Guest Houses and Inns for a complete listing of other accommodations on Key West.

Camping at Jabour's Campground

Unknown to most, camping is available in the heart of Key West just a few steps from the center of activity on Duval Street. Jabour's Campground is located downtown adjacent to the wharf (Telephone 305-294-5723). The campground has 90 sites, most common width is 21 feet, with electric, laundry, and tenting is also available.

Ernest Hemingway's home

The private home of Ernest Hemmingway is located in Key West. Preserved by the Hemmingway family for years, the home is now a museum open to the public. It was here that Ernest wrote several of his most renowned books. Also of interest is over 40 cats that live at the home, original descendents of Ernest Hemmingway's cats. There is a small fee charged to tour the home, however, a professional tour guide makes this a special look into the private life of one of the worlds greatest authors.

The Audubon House and Tropical Gardens is another historical must see when visiting Key West. There are 28 first edition Audubon works on display in the house. In addition, the Audubon House was voted The Best Museum in the Florida Keys by South Florida Magazine.

And last but never least, Key West was the home of Jimmy Buffet during the early years of his song writing career. Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville is the most interesting bar and lounge in Key West. Occasionally, Jimmy shows up to play a few songs for the crowd. Impromptu casual performances is what makes people love this king of laid back creative song writing.

Sunset in Key West

Perhaps the most interesting museum of historical value is Mel Fishers Treasure Museum located in the heart of Key West near Duval Street. Here you can see the treasure of the Atocha, the richest treasure find since the opening of King Tut's tomb. The articulate craftsmanship in gold, silver, and jewels from this 16th Century Spanish Gallon is truly unbelievable. Jewelry stores in Key West offer the last remaining coins available for sale from the Atocha. The value of these coins may skyrocket unless another shipwreck is found. Value of treasure is a simple factor of supply and demand.

The second most interesting island in the Keys is Marathon Key located half way between Key Largo and Key West. One extraordinary resort located here is Holiday Isle. Holiday Isle is a beautiful hotel including live entertainment, dancing, water sports, and an extraordinary restaurant with a stunning view. Also, Blackfin Resort and The Buccaneer Resort are other very fine resorts located on Marathon.

The third most populated island in the Keys is Key Largo on the north end of the chain. Key Largo is a wonderful island with some interesting attractions.

Perhaps the most interesting attraction in Key Largo is the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park located at mile marker 102.5 on US 1. This Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary covers 178 miles of protected reef. Activities inside the park include scuba diving, glass bottom boat tours, snorkeling tours, and camping. There are 47 campsites. Reservations must be made in advance for camping. See The Best of The Florida Keys for a complete list of parks located in the Keys.

The most prestigious resort in the Keys is located at Key Largo. The Ocean Reef Club includes a first class marina, restaurants, 24 hour camera surveillance, and accommodations for the most demanding guest. Often referred to as "Ocean Grief" by yacht crew who are excluded from members facilities, Ocean Reef is a first class resort.

The drive to Key West via the Overseas Highway is one of the most scenic in America. There are thousands of small hotels and small resorts to numerous to mention. The snorkeling, diving, and fishing are some of the best in the continental US. For Tours or custom cruises, please visit Capt Daniel Maye.
